This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted October 2004, is from Michele Blanc Berman, daughter of the artist.
Manny Blanc was born into a family of musicians. His father, Samuel "Shimele" Blank, arrived from Eastern Europe at the turn of the last century and worked as a musician and composer in New York City. Countless other relatives pursued musical careers in the United States, South America and Europe.
Blanc worked as a professional musician throughout his life. He began studying music and performing as a child. Later he studied at Damrosch, Juilliard and Curtis Institute. He was a drummer, arranger, copyist, and composer of both popular and orchestral works.
While in his early forties and recovering from minor surgery, he was given a paint set and began painting. From that moment on, he painted continuously and passionately throughout his life. He studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School and was a pupil of Charles Seide, a popular teacher of the time. In the 1950's he exhibited in group shows at the museum and in private galleries, including the Arts Gallery and the New York City Center Gallery. He exhibited with artists such as Murray Tinkelman, Sid Englehardt, Adolph Gottlieb, and Jacob Lawrence.
Blanc created large canvases of playful musicians, contorted gymnasts and streetscapes evoking European cities and New York. He combined bold primitive images and sophisticated compositions. He worked in oils, pen and ink and water colors. His later and larger works were painted in acrylics.
Manny Blanc's original music has been archived at the New York Public Library in its Performing Arts Collection.
