| The following, submitted January 2005, is from the artist.
Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1952, Mariellen Baker moved to New York City and started painting in her 30's while studying at the Art Student's League. While in Manhattan, Baker painted primarily portraits. She had a showing at The National Arts Club in 1998, winning critical acclaim for her "Faces Of New York" - a series of 8 portraits of homeless people. While in New York, she was affiliated with the Garrison Art Center, Garrison-on-Hudson, NY and painted landscapes of Hudson River scenes. Baker was commissioned to paint a portrait of an aged Hudson River Fisherman by the musician Pete Seeger and by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. That portrait, "Henry Gouradine" is on permanent loan to the Hudson River Fisheries Museum at Pace University, White Plains, NY. Baker moved to the California coast in 2000, choosing a rural area just south of San Francisco. Taking influence from her beautiful California surroundings, she paints land and seascapes of local scenes. She won 'Honorable Mention' in 2004 for her portrait, "A Grandmother's Delight" in the American Society of Portrait Artists Annual Competition. She is currently represented by several galleries in California, and has portraits, seascapes, landscapes and still lifes in homes and offices all over the world. She also teaches several oil painting classes each week to adults and seniors in the Bay Area of California. |
