Artist's Statement:
"Although I work in many different media (digital drawing, acrylic, charcoal, etching, lithography, pastel, silkscreen), my images have consistently been realist landscapes which show ordinary scenes transformed by light in a way that suggests a spiritual narrative.
Maine has always been a major source of subject matter, but I also find material in the greater Boston area and when traveling. Occasionally I work from life, but more frequently my images start with photographic slides. A couple of years ago I started using Fractal Design Painter to manipulate the images on a computer before arriving at a final version to paint. Most recently I have working entirely in Painter, producing hand-rendered digital charcoal drawings using a stylus and a digitizing tablet. These are output as fine art Iris prints on rag paper.
The ease of experimenting that the computer offers plus the ability to store and compare dozens of variations has sharpened my work from the beginning compositional stages to the final drawings. Because I like a high level of detail, I work very slowly, taking several months per piece.
I am influenced by almost everything I see, but certain artists have been very important to me, among them Hopper, Porter, Inness, and the Luminists.
I began drawing and painting as a child. I was raised mostly in Easton, Pennsylvania, and attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, where I majored in English. I am self-taught as an artist. Professional affiliations include the Board of the Boston Printmakers.
I have traveled in the American West and Southwest, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, England, France, Nova Scotia, Peru, and Quebec.
