This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The daughter of Adam S. and Eliza (West) Bare, Martha West Bare was born in February, 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census the family was living in Abington, Pennsylvania, and by 1890 her father is listed in the Philadelphia City Directory as a business manager.
In 1895 she married Russell T. Boswell, a lawyer of note, and in the 1900 census, at age 36, they are listed in Philadelphia. Her obituary states: “The couple moved to Washington, D.C. about 1926, shortly after her
husband was appointed an attorney for the Department of the Interior.
She died at her home at 1432 R Street on March 22, 1940. Burial was in
Philadelphia.”
Although her education is yet unknown, her artwork would seem to pre-date her marriage in 1895. A note of interest; in the 1906 Boyd’s Blue Book of Society, the couple are shown living at the address of her father – 2030 Mt. Vernon, Philadelphia.
Information from Census Records and Obituary.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following is from Stephanie Strass. Martha W. Bare Little is known about this 19th century still life painter whose few known works bear a strong resemblance to Milne Ramsey. From Philadelphia, she may have been a student of Ramsey, also from Philadelphia. She exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy from 1888-1890, at the National Academy of Design in 1890, and at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
