Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
| A contemporary American painter and printmaker, Michael Biddle is the son of the famous social realist artist, George Biddle (1885-1973). Michael Biddle began his artistic education at Harvard College (1952-56) and furthered his studies at the Fine Arts Academy, Vienna (1959), the Central School of Art and Crafts, London (1959-60) and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME (1961).
Michael Biddle's first major exhibitions date from 1962 when his etchings and lithographs were shown at both the Brooklyn Museum and at the Society of American Graphic Artists. Since that time his art has been exhibited at the Associated American Artists Gallery, New York (1965 & 1967), Seattle Art Museum (1967), Pratt Manhattan Center (1974), National Academy of Design (1977), Rutgers University (1979), Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, (1992), the State University of New York (1995), and many other venues.
Michael Biddle has also served as the Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He currently maintains his studio at Croton-on-Hudson, New York.
"Cheetah", in the collection of the Butler Institute, belongs to the first decade of Michael Biddle's career. Many of his earlier works of art deal with social themes and issues and "Cheetah" -- with its masses of humanity and movement -- depicts an out of control, 'baby boomer' rock concert from the 1960's. It clearly captures the unique spirit of the times. "Cheetah" was probably commissioned and published by the Associated American Artists of New York.
Today the art of Michael Biddle is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Boston Public Library, Library of Congress, Rosenwald Collection, University of Massachusetts, University of Minnesota and the Walter Chrysler Museum |
