Biography from Art of Russia Gallery, LLC:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Known for his contemporary genre scenes and realistic portraiture, Nikolai Baskakov first studied in 1933 with the famous Russian art educator Pavel Alekseevich Vlasov at the Astrakhan Art School.  Following this initial education, Baskakov fulfilled six years in the Soviet Far East serving under the Red Army.

In 1943 he began exhibiting his art; although it wasn’t until 1951 that he graduated from the Ilya Repin Institute in Leningrad from Boris Ioganson’s studio.  His focus was on historical representation.  That same year he participated in a significant show in Moscow, the All-Union Art Exhibition, which aimed to present “a true and historically concrete depiction of reality in its revolutionary development […] combined with the task of educating workers in the spirit of Communism.”*

A dedicated member of the Saint Petersburg Union of Artists (previously named the Leningrad branch of the Union of the Artists of Russian Federation), Baskakov continued for the next forty years to paint numerous works in the Realist and Impressionist styles.

In Paris in 1989, an auction of works from the Leningrad School revealed a number of previously unknown artists to the West, Baskakov included.  Subsequently many of his paintings were acquired by American collectors, with whom they remain today. Since the artist’s death in St. Petersburg, his work has spread to museums throughout Russia as well as residing in collections in France, Japan, the U.S., Germany and England.
