| Norman Barr, WPA artist, was born in 1908 and died in NYC in
1994. He studied at the New York Academy of Art. In the
late 1930's he was one of six artists chosen in a competition by ACA
Galleries. He remained with the ACA Gallery until 1943 when he
was inducted in the army. Through a national competition
conducted by the Pepsi-Cola Company, his work was included in a
traveling exhibition 1943 through 1944 and was seen at the Metropolitan
Museum, Carnegie Institute, San Francisco Museum, Los Angeles County
Museum, Cleveland Museum, etc. His work was selected in a
national competition for inclusion in an exhibition at the Tupperware
Museum, Florida in 1956, and was included in the "First Cape Cod
Artists Traveling Exhibition" organized by the Rowland Foundation 1957
to 1958. In Provincetown, the Heritage Museum and the Provincetown Art
Association and Museum have Barr's work. He has participated in
the following national and regional juried exhibitions: Connecticut
Academy of Fine Arts, Audubon Artists' Society, Providence Art Club,
Silvermine Guild of Artists, Provincetown Art Association., Eastern
States Exposition and Museum of Fine Arts, Springfield, Massachusetts,
Art USA, Butler Institute of American Art, and American Drawings,
Portsmouth, Virginia. He was also in the following exhibitions:
"Collectors' Choice" at the Jewish Museum, American Society of
Contemporary Artists, New School of Social Research, New York State
Capitol, Pensacola Art Center, Long Island University, Adelphi
University, University of Pennsylvania., Seton Hall, New York; W.P.A.
Artists "Then and Now" exhibition.
His murals appear in the
Municipal Building, New York City, Roosevelt Island Babies Hospital,
New York City; and Julia Richmond High School, New York City; and were
completed while he was on the WPA mural project from 1934-1937.
In addition he was on the WPA easel project from 1937-1943. The
Museum of the City of New York in 1987 purchased 12 of his paintings,
done in the 1930's and 40's. He is included in the Archives of American Art, the Who's Who in American Art; Who's Who in the East and Distinguished Mid-Atlantic Artists.
