| Living primarily in East Lansing, Michigan where he was Professor of Painting and Serigraphy at Michigan State University,, Owen Brainard also lived in Des Moines, Iowa, where from 1952 to 1957, he was Assistant Professor of Design and Painting. He was also a free-lance designer and illustrator for Lincoln-Mercury Times Magazine, for the Iowa Children's Home Society, and for publications of Michigan State University.
Brainard took his art training at Columbia University with Dong Kingman; at Syracuse University, BFA, 1948, with Stephen Peck; State University New York Albany, 1951; Syracuse University, Museum of Fine Arts , 1952, with Fred Haucke.
Memberships included the College Art Association
Exhibitions: Walker Art Center Biennial, 1953; Regional Art Today, Joslyn Museum, Omaha, Nebraska, 1957; Art: Madison Square Garden, New York, 1958; Library of Congress, 1958.
A commission was a mosaic wall mural at Everett High School, Lansing, Michigan, 1959.
