Paul Jean Baus (1914-2006), was an artist and art professor at Kent State University in Ohio. He was born in Indianapolis, IN to painter Simon P Baus and his wife, Edith Baus, and died in Kent, OH. He obtained bachelors and masters degrees at Ohio State University, and joined the School of Art at Kent State University in Ohio in 1947 as a sculpture professor.
One of Paul’s early sculptures, Indian Mother and Child, was selected to represent the State of Indiana in the Second National Exhibition of American Art, a feature of New York’s Third Annual Summer Festival of Music, Art, Dance, and Drama.
In the 1948 annual exhibition at the John Herron Art Museum, Paul won the top prize, offered for the most meritorious work in any medium, for two portrait heads, Karen, a child, and Portrait, a man, each modeled in the round and cast in plaster. Paul was the first person in the exhibit’s forty-one year history to win the big prize with a sculpture instead of a painting.
Paul’s later work includes a bronze sculpture of a child, which won the first prize in sculpture at the 1955 Hoosier Salon exhibit. The bronze figure Child with Bird, which won first prize in sculpture at the 1962 Hoosier Salon exhibit, was later installed in a fountain at a university library in Montgomery, Alabama.
Paul designed the Kent State University seal for its semi-centennial, in the shape of a shield. The leaf and burr are from a chestnut tree, which was common in Ohio until it was wiped out by disease years ago.
