RELEVANT DATES
November 18, 1906: Born in Brussels, Belgium
1924: Begins to paint with A.-T.J. Bastien (1873-1955), a Postimpressionist landscape painter
1928: First solo exhibition at Galerie d'Egmont in Brussels. Show is sold out.
1929-35: Studies art history at Université Libre de Bruxelles, with a thesis on El Greco. Travels to Corsica, Spain, North Africa, and Yugoslavia, as well as to Southern France and Italy. While initially heavily influenced by the Impressionists and Postimpressionists, he is increasingly drawn to the work of the Flemish Expressionists, with their emphasis on form, and the French Fauves, with their stress on color.
1934: Travels extensively throughout Europe and works in a variety of jobs: assistant to the Consul General of Haiti, writer and playright, art critic, photographer.
1950-88: Settles in Columbus, Ohio, where is wife, Erika, is teaching at the Ohio State University. Paints and draws in graphite, gouache, and acrylics, drawing heavily on the visual images he collected in his travels. He begins to show his work, first in several one-person exhibitions at the Ohio State University and in other venues such as Grinnell College and the Blanden Gallery, both in Iowa, then at the Columbus Museum of Fine Art (now the Columbus Museum of Art) (1964), at Battelle Memorial Institute (1965), and in Edmonton, Canada, at the Jaycox Gallery (1966).
September 1988: (Columbus, Ohio) dies
September 1989: Retrospective exhibition of his work is shown at the Schumacher Gallery, Capital University, with the support of the Ohio Arts Council.
September 2001: Paul-Henri Bourguignon 2001 Retrospective Exhibition at Gallery V in Columbus, Ohio.
November 2005: Gallery solo show, New York, NY
February 2007: Paul-Henri Bourguignon: A Centennial Visit The Ohio State University Faculty Club, Columbus, Ohio
May 2008: Gallery solo show, Bexley, Ohio
