Pauline Élise Bourges was born in 1838 in Paris.  Bourges was specialized in genre, landscape and portrait painting.  Since 1866, she lived in Auvers-sur-Oise, close to Paris, along with a group of painters which became the ‘School of Ecouen’.  One of the pioneers of French Impressionism, Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878) was a helpful patron of her art.

In 1879, her watercolour ‘Eventail’ was shown at the ‘Salon’ at the Palais des Champs-Elysées.  In 1892, she exhibited three works in the exhibition "Exhibition for the Art of Women", at the Palais de l’Industrie in Paris.  Amongst her well known works are ‘Fillette au chapeau de paille’, ‘Pommiers en fleurs’ and ‘A girl washing clothes’.

The artist died in 1909 in Auvers-sur-Oise, the same place where Vincent van Gogh also found death in 1890.
