This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Known simply as Peter Charlie, he was born in Armenia and immigrated to the US in 1903. He is one of those artists who isolated themselves from the world while creating a fantastic private universe. He settled on a farm in rural Leechburg, Pennsylvania and excepting service in World War I, lived there as a hermit his entire life.
Only after his death did the opening of his garage reveal 70 paintings and the fact that he was a skillful folk painter. In his work are various influences: his religious beliefs, Armenian folk motifs, dramatic moments in American history, and a fascination with space, demons and subconscious elements. | |
