This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born and raised on the Oregon coast near Newport, Rick Bartow creates paintings and sculptures of primal figures.
Although he was encouraged as a child to pursue his art, Bartow opted to earn a degree in education. After college he was drafted and he spent 13 months fighting in Vietnam. Upon his return he became an alcoholic and fell into deep depression. He started drawing again with the only art supplies he could afford, graphite and paper. Bartow continued working on his art, using it as a release, during the next ten years. At this time he was also teaching in the Oregon Public schools, and it wasn't until his boss encouraged him to focus on his art full time that he left teaching to concentrate on his talents.
Bartow also makes carved wood and mix-media sculptures from pieces of alder or cedar. To achieve a textural effect, he uses the traditional crooked knife and many kinds of adzes of indigenous peoples.
His inspiration comes from his Yurok heritage, and he remained on land that belonged to his Yurok tribal father. He also travels extensively to interact with other native people.
