This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| An illustrator for Greenleaf books in the 1960s and 1970s, Robert Bonfils painted pin-up genre testing the limits of the culture for the paperback book covers. His images were playful, sexy, attractive and sold well.
Robert Bonfils grew up in Kansas City and was encouraged to pursue his artistic talents by his parents. His senior year high school art class was taught by Mabel Hewitt and five of her students went on to pursue successful careers in art including long running comic strips (Beetle Bailey) illustration and advertising. While in high school Bonfils won a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute. After serving in the military during War World II, he returned to Chicago where he learned the business of commercial art working in advertising agencies throughout the 1950s.
Bonfils retired from commercial art after his years at Greenleaf. He pursued a career in fine art and his work was well respected. Bonfils now does work on commission recreating some of his popular paperback book covers.
