| | Born in London, he trained as a doctor. By 1798, he had relocated to Hartford, Connecticut from where he was a traveling doctor, a service he advertised. However, he became best known for his portraits, something he did not advertise. He did at least 30 portraits of local residents, and his earliest known work is a watercolor portrait of local architect Samuel Blin dated 1808. Elements associated with his work are plain background, stiff posture, tight mouth, meticulously rendered hair and detailed lace. In 1808, he married Abigail Griswold, a widow with whom he had two children. |
