Biography from Lee Youngman Galleries:
| Sara Barnes was born in San Francisco, grew up in Berkeley, California, and received a bachelor's degree in design from U.C.L.A. She did post graduate work at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and the Instituto in Guipuzcuano in San Sebastian.
Barnes worked as a fashion designer in Los Angeles for ten years before taking a year off to travel and reflect. It was in Greece that she began to paint, and painting has been the central interest of her life since then.
In 1982, Sara Barnes was commissioned by the Block China Corporation to do a series of designs for a set of china. The china, known as "Napa Valley: Four Seasons", depicted various scenes of the Napa Valley at different seasons of the year. She has also done wine labels for Robert Pecota Winery in the Napa Valley, as well as posters of the towns of Calistoga and St. Helena, California.
In 1986 she did twelve paintings that were used in a children's book, "Napa Jack's First Flight."Barnes does hundreds of sketches in the field before returning to her studio where she interprets her sketches in paint. She works on highly gessoed and polished masonite boards using acrylic paints.Barnes has been the subject of feature articles in American Artist magazine, Spur magazine, and the book "Napa Valley: from Golden Fields to Purple Harvest". |
