This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Sheldon Berlyn was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1929.

Berlyn studied at the Worcester Art Museum School and at Yale’s Norfolk Summer School of Music and Art. He also studied with Herbert P. Barnett at The Art Academy of Cincinnati.

In 1958, he became a faculty member at State University of New York at Buffalo, where he taught painting and drawing for over 40 years.

Berlyn has exhibited widely in his lifetime. He was a frequent award winner at the Western New York Exhibitions during the late ‘50s and ‘60s. His work was included in The Wayward Muse: A Historical Survey of Painting in Buffalo, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s seminal 1987 show.

In 1990, the UB Poetry/Rare Books Collection Gallery recognized his achievements with a retrospective show celebrating his work from 1958 up until that time. In 1997, the Castellani Art Museum, Niagara Falls and The University Gallery/Center for the Arts, SUNY at Buffalo held simultaneous exhibitions of his art.

In 2007 Berlyn received the Bellinger Memorial Award in Painting from the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts.
