| | Born in Southampton County, VA on Aug. 1, 1818. After graduating from the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Lt. Blunt accompanied a surveying expedition to California during 1849-50. His sketches of the California coast were included in A Series of Charts, With Sailing Directions (1852). He was captain of the steamer Winfield Scott when it was lost at sea in 1853.
