| | Born in Mexico on Oct. 16, 1906. Sofia moved to California with her family at an early age. While attending the CSFA, she met her husband-to-be Ray Bertrand. From 1937 she lived with her husband across the Golden Gate in Mill Valley. After their separation in the 1940s, she moved south to the small town of Goleta near Santa Barbara where she continued to paint until about 1965. She died there on Jan. 10, 1996.
