|  Sondra Freckelton was born in Dearborn, Michigan in 1936. She studied both art and horticulture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago.
She began her career as a sculptor working in wood and plastics, exhibiting under her married name, Sondra Beal (Freckelton and her husband, artist Jack Beal, live and work near Oneonta, New York, and in New York City).
During the early 1970's, Freckelton turned to realism in her work, as part of the movement toward a "New Realism". She began working in transparent watercolor, painting everyday objects around her home combined with flowers and other plant life, contrasting three-dimensional form and two-dimensional pattern. She had been making watercolor studies for her transparent cast-resin sculptures.
Freckelton's compositions are influenced by a feeling for music, "a mixture of complicated quick passages, simple rest areas, major thrustsand theme." While she sometimes uses photographs to record transient items, she works primarily from life, creating preliminary drawings and studies in pastel and oil that are later developed in her watercolors. "The Garden Plan" is an example of her large, narrative, realistic still-lifes.
Freckelton received an Ingraham Merrill grant and Bradford Print prize. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions and publications dealing with contemporary American realism, still life and watercolor painting. She has exhibited at major galleries in New York, Chicago, Washington, D. C., and San Francisco, as well the Whitney Museum Annual, New York City, and Springfield Art Museum, Missouri. Her work is represented at Prudential Insurance, Newark, New Jersey, and the Sara Roby Foundation, New York City, among others.
Freckelton's work and teaching philosophy are the subjects of the Watson-Guptill publication entitled "Dynamic Still Lifes in Watercolor," by M. Stephen Doherty.
