Steven Brent Personal Statement, March 24, 2004: I like to go into the studio and mix up a color and throw it onto the canvas with any tool that appeals to me at the time. I surround myself with the canvas from three sides like a cave or womb. I build up ripples, and mounds of canvas and huge pieces of dried paint. When they are secure, I can throw sometimes a gallon at one throw of gel thickened paint and watch it slide down the sculpted surface in its own free flowing pattern. Sometimes I get a big paint mitten and grab about a quart of thick paint in one mitt-full and drag the gloppy mixture down across the surface just catching the very tops of the mounds and frozen paint strokes.
The material itself is very exciting to work with. The new plastic paint comes in so many thicknesses and viscosities, translucent combinations, plus interference and iridescent mediums. It can create effects that were only possible before with nature; like ice, crystal, water, or rock formations. Large clumps and globs of beautiful dried paint. Some colors dry translucent, and some dry opaque or gritty and matte with a finish of dry finely powdered sand. Marble dust mixed with the raw acrylic medium creates a matte gel which dries semi translucent.
