This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Steven Backman creates sculptures out of toothpicks. His works include a 13 foot Golden Gate Bridge made from 30,000 toothpicks, a San Francisco cable car made of 4,000 toothpicks and a yacht made from 10,000 toothpicks.
Backman's favorite visual artist in LeRoy Neiman. Neiman even signed a toothpick sculpture that Backman had made of the artist.
In 1987 San Francisco Mayor Diane Feinstein requested his Golden Gate Bridge sculpture be displayed at the St Francis Yacht Club press conference to highlight the 50th anniversary celebration of the bridge. Both Mayors Feinstein in 1987 and Brown in 1997 proclaimed Backman a genius. In 2005 Mayor Gavin Newsom proclaimed January 11 "Steven J Backman Day."
Backman also creates bronzes of his toothpick sculptures.
