This biography from the Archives of AskART:
From Paris, Texas and then based in Dallas, Thomas Broad was a painter whose primary career was architecture. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in Austin, and then did post graduate work at Harvard University. However, his time there was cut short when fire destroyed many buildings in his home town, and he returned to Paris to help rebuild from the devastation. A professor suggested to him that he would learn more about architecture by working on reconstruction projects in Paris. This suggestion set his career choice for the remainder of his life except for two years during World War I when he was an army supply officer at Kelly Field in Texas. This period was followed by time in Kansas City with an architectural firm and study in England, France, Italy and Belgium.

In 1923, Broad settled in Dallas and became director of the Dallas Art Institute and also served as a park designer and on the boards of the Dallas Art Museum and the Texas Architectural Examiners Board. He retired from his architectural firm in 1962.

During these years, he was also a painter, working in pastels, and watercolor. He exhibited with the Annual Allied Arts Exhibition and the Texas Fine Arts Association, and was a member of the Dallas Art Association and the Dallas Watercolor Society.
