| Townley Benson was born in Port Maitland, Nova Scotia on April 23, 1848. Benson was an itinerant artist who was in and out of southern California after 1893. While there, he painted desert landscapes around Palm Springs. His last years were spent in Mexico where he painted scenes of daily life.
His works are rare. While at his easel, he was shot by revolutionaries who mistook him for establishment in Satillo, Mexico on July 15, 1907.
