Vladimir Bondarenko was a Ukranian-Russian painter. He studied art at the Odessa School of Painting and the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg with Ivan Shishkin and Arhip Kuindzhi. At Shishkin’s studio his skills as a landscape artist blossomed. He followed in his professor's footsteps and developed his own artistic relationship to Valaam, an archipelago on Lake Ladoga.
He was well known for his analytical studies of forest landscapes and his appreciation of northern nature. He was also associated with the Valaam Art School, where monks received professional artistic training, the proof of which is in the walls of their churches.
