This biography from the Archives of AskART:
William Hubert Burgess was born in England in 1825. Burgess worked in NYC as a lithographer for a few years. Accompanied by his younger brother George, he sailed around the Horn to California in 1850 to seek his fortune in the gold fields. He later taught art for 24 years in public schools of the San Francisco Bay area. He died at the home of his son in Placer County, CA in 1893. As well as an artist, he was also a jeweler and inventor of pencil sharpeners. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1858-75; Calif. State Fair, 1859. Works Held: California Historical Society.
