Walter Daniel Batley (1850-1936)

He was born at Westgate Street, Ipswich in 1850, second son of the five children of Henry Baring Batley (1809-1863) a plumber & glazier, and his wife Maria née Orford (1819-1904).  Owing to Walter’s poor health, in 1860, the family purchased a seaside cottage at Felixstowe where Walter lived with his mother after she became a widow.  In 1868-1873 a student at Ipswich School of Art, living with his mother at 7 Norwich Road, Ipswich after which he moved to study at South Kensington and the Royal Academy schools, London where in 1874 he lodged with his brother Henry and was chosen to copy the Raphael Cartoons for the government in which year he won the South Kensington’s Gold Medal for his fine drawing of a cast of an antique figure and the following year exhibited at the Royal Academy and sent work there up until 1901.  He also exhibited at Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

He married at St. Matthew’s church, Ipswich on 21 December 1878, Catherine Emily (Katie) (1851-1939), second daughter of Buckingham Bird of 17 Westgate Street, Ipswich and their son Claude was born the following year.  In 1879 an artist, figures & landscapes, of 3 King Street, Ipswich and a founder member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club where in 1881 exhibited amongst others Knights Templars Monument, Westminster Abbey and exhibited 1883-85 when living at 12 St Matthews Street, Ipswich where he was still living in 1900.  The same he year moved to ‘Little Roundwood’, Sidegate Lane, Ipswich with his wife and four of his children, Wilfred, Eva Alice, Vera and Sybil.  In 1891-1901 his mother Maria was living at 21 Fellows Road, Hampstead with her other son Henry George Batley, a civil servant in the education department, and his wife Alice Mary, daughter of Charles Browne, a barrister at law and where she died in 1904, aged 84.

Walter, after living for a short time in Felixstowe finally settled at ‘The Anchorage’ Cauldwell Hall Road, Ipswich in 1928 and where he died in 1936.  His wife Catherine followed in 1939, aged 88.
