This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Walter Brackett was known for his fish and game still lifes, popular with many sportsmen in the late 19th Century. He also painted many portraits.

Brackett was born in Unity, Maine and his younger brother was sculptor Edward A. Brackett. He settled his studio in Boston, supporting his family at first with portraiture.

He became established with his fish still life beginning in 1873 when he exhibited four paintings, each a catch of fish, at the Crystal Palace in London.

Exhibitions: Boston Atheneum (1846-1869), the Apollo Association (1852), and the National Academy of Design (1860 and 1865). He was a member of the latter organization. Brackett's portrait of "Captain Joseph Pitty Couthouy, ca. 1852, is in the collection of the Boston Atheneum.
