Born in NYC in 1826. Butler worked in his native city until 1854. Caught up with gold fever, he came to California in 1855 and remained. After no success at the mines, he settled in San Francisco. In 1855 he published the California Mail and during 1860-85 was editor of the California Police Gazette. He also was an engraver for the mint in the 1860s and a conductor on the cable cars in the 1870s. He died in San Francisco of consumption on Jan. 18, 1879. Exh: Mechanics' Inst.
