This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Best known for his humor-filled watercolors, porcelains, and prints, contemporary California artist Will Bullas was born in Ohio, and raised in the Southwest.

He recalls drawing for as long as he can remember. As a young man, he enrolled in Arizona State University, and was majoring in fine arts and minoring in dramatic arts when he was drafted. In Vietnam, Bullas' skills stood him in good stead; his first professional pieces were pencil portraits of fellow soldiers, which were sent to loved ones back home. After returning from military duty he enrolled in the Brooks Institute of Fine Art in Santa Barbara, California, where he studied with noted instructor Ray Strong. "He was not only a master of landscape painting," Bullas said of his teacher, "but a master of color theory. And he could tell a great story, too." Bullas graduated with a degree in oil painting.

With the encouragement of his wife, Claudia, Bullas quit his printing press job - reproducing the work of other artists - and concentrated instead on his own art. That was the beginning of a yearlong voyage across the Midwest and Southwest, taking Will and Claudia to dozens of malls and parking lots where Will first began to sell his work.

The couple then settled in Carmel, California, where Will's art continued to develop, attracting the notice of critics and peers. He won the Strathmore Award at the 1981 Rocky Mountain National Water media Exhibition, the William G. Morrison Award for the Adirondacks Exhibition of American Watercolors, and the First Place Award for the 1990 Signature Membership Exhibition of the National Watercolor Society. Bullas also was awarded the California Watercolor Association's 1997 Silver Medal. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, as well as the Knickerbocker Artists of New York.

Bullas likes to call his work fun art, his subjects are often being animals, such as the Indian Runner ducks that have provided him endless ideas, as well as other critters that he adores. In addition to his watercolors, Bullas has created a series of porcelain sculptures, which often convey his quirky sense of humor. Many of them are accompanied by one-liner titles, such as Wine-oceros and Duck Tape. He refers to his fondness for panting both serious and humorous works as the yin and yang of creating.

In addition to his original artwork, Bullas has almost thirty limited edition prints published, as well as his books, A Fool and His Bunny, and A Full Moon.
