From Detroit, Michigan, William Bostick was born in Marengo, Illinois to a family that moved often because his father was a Baptist minister with numerous assignments. During Bostick's childhood, they lived in Freeport, Illinois; Council Bluffs, Iowa; Oshkosh, Wisconsin; La Porte, Indiana; Rochester, Pennsylvania; and then Detroit where he remained and became a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, and calligrapher and for thirty years, 1946 to 1976, was administrator of the Detroit Institute of Art (showing 500 of 2202 characters).
