This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following, submitted July 2002, is from Bruce Bagnell, son of the artist:
William Bagnell died 12/31/2001 at the age of 97 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was, at the time, the oldest member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club. Although he did some exhibits and gave a few paintings to relatives and friends, he never wanted to sell his art and has left a large body of work that the immediate family will be documenting and then releasing some paintings, etchings, watercolors.
William Bagnell was born and went to school in New York City and studied briefly at the Pratt Institute where he had a scholarship. But he was forced to go to work as a commercial artist due to early death of his father. He was known in the Village and in Woodstock in the 30's and received a favorable review in the "New York Times" in the 30's but then dropped out of sight became he married and raised a family.
An avid weekend artist, he painted with a small group of artists in Rockland County, New York. He worked first as a draftsman for Con Edison, and later became a self-taught electrical engineer for Ebasco. Upon retirement to Stamford, NY, he painted for 20 years until the death of his wife, Carmen. He then moved first to Philadelphia and then to Bala Cynwyd in the outskirts of Philadelphia. It was in these last years that he worked with the Sketch Club.
William Bagnell's primary interest was in depicting people, and he could catch a likeness in a few minutes due to the training he received in the special artist classes he attended in the New York school system. The instructor would only allow the model to pose for a few moments.
Other work does include some landscapes, a few still lifes, a few sculptures, quite a few watercolor nudes, and a large body of etchings, which were done during his stay in Stanford, New York where he had an etching press.
