 Born in Haddington, Scotland, Brown studied in Edinburgh with James Ballantine, glass stainer and decorator. Between 1863 and 1899, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, New Watercolor Society, and other organizations in London. Brown was elected an associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1871, and became a full member in 1884.
