This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| William Beckman, a painter of nearly photographically conceived figures and landscapes, was born in 1942 in Maynard, Minnesota. He received a BA degree from St. Cloud State University, Minnesota, and MA and MFA degrees from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. His meticulous technique involves shaving layers off the surface of his paintings with a razor to create a lustrous surface that is not varnished.
William Beckman was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design, New York City, in 1992, and Academician in 1994. He has been a visiting artist at Towson University, Towson, Maryland. He gave a lecture on his work at Arizona State University, Tempe, in 2003.
His work was included in the exhibition, The Nude in Contemporary Art, at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut, in 1999. A William Beckman retrospective exhibition tours the United States in 2004.
The book, William Beckman, with an essay by Carl Belz, and a comprehensive view of Beckman's art and career, was published in 2002 by the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, and Seven Bridges Foundation, Greenwich, Connecticut. New York City's Forum Gallery put out a catalogue of a 1998 exhibition, Drawing the Figure: Kent Bellows, William Beckman, with artist biographies, and an essay by Townsend Wolfe.
