Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
William Gedney Bunce (1842-1916) is best known as a landscape and marine painter, and mainly for his studies of Venice painted during his many stays there. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he began his career in art as early in 1856, when he took drawing lessons from Julius Busch.

Bunce served two years under General Fremont during the Civil War, mainly in the Shenandoah Valley. After his return, he attended Cooper Union, in New York City, and studied under William Hart. Moving to Italy soon afterward, he became close friends with Augustus St. Gaudens.

Bunce was a member of the National Academy and other important groups, and received many awards. He is listed in Mallet, Fielding's, Who's Who and Davenport's.
