This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| The following is from Stephanie Strass:
Addison Center was born in 1830 in Gloucester and died there in 1892. He spent most of his life in his hometown, serving as the deputy collector of customs there from 1867-1885. He was also a businessman and a Captain in the Union Army. And he found time to paint portraits, landscapes, and marine scenes.
Today his works can still be found in Gloucester at the Independent Christian Church and City Hall. There was an exhibition of his works at the Cape Ann Historical Society in Gloucester in 1980 and an accompanying article in "The Magazine Antiques" in April 1980. An article also appeared in the "Gloucester Daily Times," March 14, 1980, concerning the exhibition.
