| | Born in South Africa on Feb. 6, 1893. By the 1920s Coucke had immigrated to Oakland where he studied at the CCAC under Xavier Martinez and Perham Nahl. During this period he lived in the home of Paul Schmitt with whom he worked as a commercial artist. In 1928 Coucke entered the Order of St Francis as a religious brother and served as art advisor to the Franciscans. He died in San Francisco on Feb. 5, 1955.
