Known as a painter of tonalist landscapes, Alexis Comparet was born in South Bend, Indiana, and traveled widely. He studied with Benjamin Constant in Paris in 1874 and with early Colorado painter Harvey Young. In 1879, he was in New Mexico for a brief time and then returned to his home state of Colorado to teach at the Colorado Academy of Design, which was short lived.
One of his collectors was Sarah Bernhardt who introduced him to her troupe when she was performing in Denver. In 1906, he (showing 500 of 1418 characters). |
