This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Known as a painter of tonalist landscapes, Alexis Comparet was born in South Bend, Indiana, and traveled widely. He studied with Benjamin Constant in Paris in 1874 and with early Colorado painter Harvey Young. In 1879, he was in New Mexico for a brief time and then returned to his home state of Colorado to teach at the Colorado Academy of Design, which was short lived.

One of his collectors was Sarah Bernhardt who introduced him to her troupe when she was performing in Denver. In 1906, he moved to San Diego, California and later changed his name to Compera. He died at Coronado Beach. His work can be found at the Colorado State Museum.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in South Bend, IN on April 15, 1856. Comparet studied in Paris with Constant and with Harvey O. Young in Colorado after having settled in Denver in the 1870s. He was living in Denver in obscurity until his old friend, Sarah Bernhardt, played there making his landscapes fashionable overnight. He taught at the Colorado Academy of Fine Arts until the last year of his life. Upon moving to San Diego in 1906, he died there on May 14. He also spelled his name Compera due to people's difficulty with Comparet. Exh: Blanchard Hall (LA), 1906.
