| The following biographical information has been provided by Jean Johnson, the great niece of the artist.
Alton Powell Coffey (a twin) was born July 3, 1904 in Nashville, Indiana.
After graduation from high school, he entered John Herron Art School in
Indianapolis, Indiana. There he studied four years of figure
painting, still life and landscape painting under William Forsyth and
Clifton Wheeler. He also studied four years of advanced modeling
under sculptor Myra Reynolds Richards.
He also studied under Will Vawter and Edward K. Williams.
After leaving art school, he became a member of the Hoosier Salon,
which at that time was held in Chicago. He was awarded the
Kiwanis prize for best fall landscape by a young artist in 1930 for his
painting titled Sunny Hollow.
Mr. Coffey continued to exhibit in the Hoosier Salon for several years.
Alton Coffey was a member of the Brown County Art Gallery for many
years. He was also a member of the Nashville Masonic Lodge and
the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mr. Coffey was also a carpenter working along side his brother Arthur.
Mr. Coffey married Pauline Wilkinson on August 21, 1937. They had no children.
Alton Coffey passed on July 15, 1978 at the age of 74. He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville, Indiana.
