This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Engraver, miniature and portrait painter, Alvan Clark Jr. was born in Ashfield, Massachusetts (1804). Around 1821, he began painting portraits and miniatures. Little is known about Clark's art education, although it is known that Clark was self taught in engraving (c. 1824-25). While he was painting, he continued working for textile manufacturers in Lowell, Massachusetts (1826-27), Providence, Rhode Island (1827-29), New York (1829-32), and Fall River, Massachusetts (1832-35).
In 1836 he gave up engraving for painting and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts and later set up his studio in Boston. By about 1844, his attention turned to optics and the craft of fine lenses. He is known for the manufactured telescope, that he developed with his sons.
