Biography from AskART:
| Born in San Francisco in 1955, Armand Cabrera has always been passionate about art. Encouraged by his family, Armand starting drawing dinosaurs, people and landscapes at an early age. His mother was an oil painter while his grandfather drew birds. By the time Armand was ten years old, he knew he would become a professional artist someday. At fifteen, Armand entered the Rotary Art Show in the City of Newark, California, winning 7 out of 10 awards. His first commissioned work came while in high school. Armand's art teacher traded art supplies for one of Armand's oil paintings.
With no formal art training and little money, Armand took a job as a commercial illustrator. Rapidly becoming very successful as an illustrator, Armand experienced a detour from his goal of painting oils for a living. He continued to paint in his spare time and eventually was asked to display some of his pieces in wineries in the Napa Valley. After taking awards in national competitions, Armand received his long awaited recognition and was accepted into prestigious California fine art galleries.
A self-taught artist, Armand owns an extensive collection of fine art books that he studies and interprets for his own information. Influenced by many famous artists, Armand draws his knowledge from Carl Rungius, Isaac Levitan, Percy Gray, Dean Cornwell and Albert Thomas De Rome, to name a few.
Armand divides his time between two art worlds---digital and traditional. He works professionally for TotallyGames as a Senior Artist and Art Director in the computer entertainment field. He creates backgrounds, concept art and animation. Armand's numerous clients include Elliott Portwood Productions, LucasArts, Virgin Entertainment, Microsoft. Paramount Pictures and Electronic Arts.
In the fine art world, Armand is represented by art galleries throughout California and on the Internet. He brings his love of the pristine landscape to the canvas. An avid hiker, he prefers to paint while out on the land, capturing the color and value of the present moment. Armand's attraction to nature translates to his paintings, creating a mood and style reminiscent of turn of the century landscape painters.
Armand's style is to paint alla prima, finishing his paintings in one sitting in the studio or out of doors. His subject matter spans many arenas--- landscapes, seascapes and wildlife. Although painting primarily throughout the West, Armand travels around the United States to photograph and paint various locations.
Armand Cabrera's works are purchased by high tech, entertainment, corporate and private collectors alike. For the past two years, Armand has been a finalist in the National Arts for the Parks Competition. These awards have sparked his career and contributed to his ongoing success as a fine artist. Armand is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, the American Artist Professional League and an Associate Member of the Oil Painters of America.
Armand continues to hone his craft while studying with well-known artists. His instructors include Thomas Blackshear, Iain McCaig, Kevin MacPherson, Matt Smith, Joseph Mendez, John Budicin, Michael Lynch, Wayne Wolfe and Ralph Oberg.
Armand currently makes his home in beautiful Marin County, California where he is inspired by a wealth of visual information. In his spare time, Armand teaches plein-air workshops in Northern California.
