Biography from AskART:
| Superintendent of drawing for the New Bedford Public Schools in Massachusetts from 1874 to 1894, Arthur Cumming was a painter and etcher who was born in England. He also worked in architectural offices in Philadelphia and Boston and gave private art lessons in Chicago.
In 1883, he taught at the Swain Free School of Design in New Bedford and from that period, he created a sketchbook that is a record of his student work. Included are delicate drawings of flowers and bees, as well as wallpaper designs and samples representing a late-nineteenth century taste for organic decoration.
