Averil Courtney Conwell    (1894 – 1990)

Averil Courtney Conwell (Mrs. L. D.) was born in Belvidere, Illinois, on April 29. 1894.  She was a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago* and attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts*. She studied under Albrecht Stich of Munich, Wellington J. Reynolds, John H. Vanderpoel, John Norton, Carl Krafft, John Nolf, and Edmund Giesbert.

The artist maintained a studio in the Auditorium Tower, Chicago, doing commercial craft work and newspaper work.  She joined the Oak Park Art League in 1928.  She was a member of the Board of Directors, and Program Chairman, 1930 – 1938, inaugurating the Sunday evening supper program.  Conwell was First Vice-President in 1937-38, and taught the children’s classes beginning in 1931.

She has exhibited at the Oak Park Art League, the Art Institute and other galleries in Chicago and other cities.  The artist also had special exhibits in New York and Kansas City; Findlay Galleries, Chicago; and summer shows in Lake Placid, New York.  She executed murals for St. Mary’s Hospital, De Kalb, Illinois, and Mt. Carmel Academy, Clinton, Iowa.  

Conwell was also the Director of The Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors, a member of the Arts Club of Chicago, Chicago Women’s Salon, All-Illinois Society of the Fine Arts, Chicago No-Jury Society, Chicago Galleries Association, Art Institute Alumni Association, and the River Forest Art Club. The artist maintained a studio in her River Forest home and one in her summer home in the Adirondacks.

She later moved to Upper Jay, New York where she died on July 17, 1990.
