This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Brenda Carter (1943-2010) Canadian born, Brenda Carter is an award winning painter of Canada's Natural Heritage. A long time resident of Merrickville, Ontario she traveled and painted in the remote areas of the world, working on location in both acrylics and watercolors. Carter has spent endless hours in the field, tracking and observing birds and mammals around the world. These intense and varied experiences give her paintings great accuracy. More importantly, to her and to her collectors, the energy and life of the animals she paints shine back to us from her canvases.
The first woman to receive both Duck's Unlimited and Wildlife Habitat Canada Waterfowl Art Awards, Brenda has spent over 30 years studying and painting in the field. In 1999 she completed 514 field studies of North American birds. The project and resulting exhibit attracted international attention including an interview on CBC's "As it Happens" as well as many newspaper and magazine articles.
Born in Calgary and raised in the Ottawa Valley, she studied at the Hilton Leach School of Art and the Ringling School of Art in Florida. In 1964, she first worked as an artist for the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Canadian Wildlife Service, laying the early background for her understanding of biology, animal behavior and anatomy...an integral part of her work. She then worked for several years as T. H. Manning's assistant on the circumpolar Polar Bear project. Tagging bears gave her an in depth look at these superb Arctic creatures.
Carter traveled extensively throughout the world; the Arctic and Antarctic, Africa, the U.K., the Galapagos Islands, as well as Central and South America.
Carter had a brain tumor and died on February 18, 2010 after a long illness.
