This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Known for her totemic sculpture, imposing wall reliefs and rune like drawings, she became a full-time artist at age 67.  Excepting some travel, she spent her entire life within a 50 mile radius of Shreveport, Louisiana.

She was raised on a large plantation, and her artistic inspiration and sculpture materials came from this region. She used brown earth, red clay, wood and iron. She began taking art classes in 1922, and in the 1950s was doing abstract paintings of black prisoners on a penal farm where her husband was superintendent. A 1952 trip to New York exposed her to Abstract Expressionism, as style she adopted.
