|  Born in Chicago, Illinois, she is a painter associated with a 1970s art movement called "Pattern and Decoration," named because its proponents made artwork based on commonplace decorative motifs. Her pieces fitting into this style had squiggles of paint applied through a pastry tube that suggested icing on a cake or frilly lace. Often her pieces had paint applied so thickly they gave the three-dimensional appearance of sculpture. She has also done murals including for the Baltimore, Maryland airport.
In her work, she has expressed a keen sense of humor and whimsy. She has also been an avid mountain climber, and some of her pieces suggest the landscape and conquering aspects of this activity.
Carlson's career has been based primarily in New York City where she became a resident. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Pratt Institute of Art, from 1967-1981, was Associate Professor of Art at the Philadelphia College of Art and from 1981 to 1986, was Professor of Art at Queens College City University of New York.
Her sculptures and paintings are in numerous collections including that of the Phoenix Art Museum, the Guggenheim and Metropolitan Museums in New York, and the Allem Memorial Museum in Oberlin, Ohio. |
