Born July 4, 1962, Dan Caldwell grew up in Miami Florida. He spent his early years sailing, fishing, and diving in Biscayne Bay and in the, Florida Keys. He was artistic as a child and encouraged to draw and paint by his mother, Genevieve, an interior designer .
He started surfing and became part of the emerging surf culture in the early 1970's. In 1978 Caldwell pursued this surfing passion and moved to the rural Outer Banks of North Carolina on Cape Hatteras. While living the quiet life on Hatteras Island, he developed his eye sketching and painting the commercial fisherman, rustic fish houses, and wooden boats. There he also gained a heart for the coastal wetlands.
From Cape Hatteras he went on to college at the University of Hawaii and was happy with the opportunity to pursue college education and surf at a high level while living on Oahu's North Shore. He graduated in 1986 with a B.A. in Design & Advertising at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He continued to hone drawing and painting skills at Honolulu Academy of Arts. He was mentored by top creative professionals in Hawaii's surf and advertising industry.
In 1986, Caldwell returned to South Florida and began an art direction/design career in his family's silk-screen printing company. Building the business as a key supplier of innovative T-shirt designs to the cruise line industry for 17 years, he has art directed H-Blue-O, a progressive line of sport fishing apparel. He also created a 1st place winning AAF national advertising award for a water safety campaign for Hawaii's public beaches.
In 2001 he returned to his first love and launched into a second career as a painter of regional scenes, showing his art work in Florida art shows and galleries. He has been married for seventeen years to his wife, Liz, and they have three children William 14, Elizabeth 12 and Christopher 5. For recreation they continue enjoying the ocean lifestyle together as a family.
Of his career, Caldwell writes: "I am grateful to God for blessing me with a career in art which I love."
