At age 14, Darden Camlin's first job was modeling for John Whorton's art class in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Her exposure to this Art Department head's work played a large part in her interest in portraiture. While at Brevard College, she studied under Dr. James DuBose, the former head of the Art Department at Syracuse University. Her interest grew toward painting the people of the Carolinas and South Carolina specifically.
