This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following text is copied from an exhibition brochure of work by David Campbell at The Art Center, Southbend, Indiana, October 2-23, 1966.  In October, 2006, Greyson R. Ross, submitted the information, which was given to him by his mother, Katharine Ross, who was a friend of the artist.

Born in Adrian, Michigan, and schooled in Canada, Mr. Campbell served in the U.S. Air Force and earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph. D. degrees at the Ohio State University.  He is a professor of art at the State University of New York at Oswego where he has taught painting, watercolor and graphics for nine years.  He and his wife have three young children.

La Rosa, a major work painted after a trip to Mexico, was included in the American Federation of Art College Art Show, which toured South America in 1955.  He was co-winner of first prize for "mural and sculpture and related design" in the Prix de Rome Collaborative Architectural Contest in 1956, and painted a series of commissioned murals, The Creation, at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957.

He has exhibited annually at regional shows at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, New York, in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1965 and 1966, winning first prize for graphics in 1958; at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1965 and 1966; and in the Finger Lakes Exhibitions at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, where he won a painting prize in 1963.  He has also exhibited at the 1962 Assembly Art Exhibition at the Capitol Building in Albany, New York, and at the 1962 New York State Exposition.

In 1963-64, Mr. Campbell spent a sabbatical year painting, beginning by traveling 10,000 miles through ten western European countries, sketching and photographing.  Paintings and prints based on his impressions of Europe as well as of Mexico, Canada and the locale of his home on the shore of Lake Ontario were then presented in two one-man shows: in Columbus, Ohio, at the Bryson Gallery, and in Wheeling, West Virginia, at the Oglebay Institute.

In December, 1965, he presented his first one-man show in New York City at the New Masters Gallery, Ltd., 19 E. 57th St. The exhibition was reviewed by John Gruen of the New York Herald Tribune.

His painting, Vence, exhibited at the 1966 Regional Show at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, was then purchased for their permanent collection.  The Institute has also recently purchased his silkscreen prints, Vence, Toledo, and Tous Mes Compliments.

In addition to the New Masters Gallery, Ltd., in New York City, Mr. Campbell's work is shown for sale and rental by the Appleton Gallery and Everson Museum in Syracuse, N.Y., the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, N.Y., the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts in Ohio, and ARTlenders in Montreal, Quebec.

Mr. Campbell has painted 60 commissioned portraits and another 60 major paintings are included in private collections throughout the country in addition to hundreds of prints.
