This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Maryland artist Deborah Claxton creates images by piecing tiny pieces of archival paper to board. Her artwork at first glance appears to be paintings but on further examination the intricate layering and weaving of paper becomes apparent.
As an artist Claxton was drawn to sculpture and drawing. The cut paper technique allows her to practice both of the art-forms by first drawing her images and then sculpting the tiny hand cut paper on to the drawing.
Claxton spends a few weeks creating her smaller works (18 x 24 inches) and a few months on her larger pieces (30 x 40 inches).
